Introduction
Bennett Family and their Business
- The school was opened by Mr W.J.A. Vaughan, Inspector of Schools, on 4/10/1961, with 230 students. The Principal was Mr Warren Kennedy, who died in 2002.
- Bennett Road was then not tarred as far as the school and the land to the south (towards St Clair) was bush.
- There were no buses to the school for students. They walked or rode bikes.
- For some months in the early 1960s, there were not enough buildings for students, so some children travelled by bus to St Marys Central School.
- In the 1970s, many demountable classrooms were added to the school.
- In 1979-80, owing to the large number of students, Years 5 and 6 students were accommodated in demountables at Colyton High School. At that time the school enrolment was 1765 students.
- There was an enrolment of 1200 students in 1983; 1000 students in the late 1980s.
- In 1976, a Special Education Unit was added.
- In 1983, there were urgent repairs to the school after parents threatened to withdraw their children.
- In 1984, the Library was constructed.
- In 1986, the Hall and Canteen were built, for the school’s 25th anniversary.
- In 2001, the COLA (Covered Outdoor Learning Area) was constructed in time for the school’s 40th anniversary.
